WHAT IS RECONVERSION?
Reconversion is the process by which a conventionally maintained vineyard can make the transformation to organics over a period of time. This reconversion period is the first step in the cleansing and rebalancing of the vineyard. The reconversion period is set at three years for vineyards because the grapevine is a perennial plant, whereas only two years reconversion is required for annual crops like wheat or vegetables. The reconversion period only starts once 100% organic practices are adopted, so don't think that during the reconversion period growers can use the odd non-organic treatment, they can't.

Reconversion is a tough road for the wine producer meaning extra paperwork, certification fees to pay and most importantly, a new philosophy for the vineyard (lower yields usually) new practices for those who work in it. We think that those wishing to convert should be encouraged so we are happy to support wines from estates in organic reconversion. All our reconversion wines are marked: 'R1' for first year reconversion or 'R2' for second year reconversion. The third crop of grapes picked from a vineyard in reconversion can describe itself as fully, 100%, paid-up 'organic'.
